THE ROLE OF ITS IN THE NEAR FUTURE


March 29th and 30th, Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre, Ljubljana, Slovenia

 The Electrotechnical Association of Slovenia together with Slovenian ITS Association will organize the 18th International Symposium on Electronics in Transport – ISEP. This Symposium promotes the strategic objective of integrating and strengthening the European Research Area in Slovenia as well as in the new member States, Accession States and in some nearby countries.

The Symposiums’ 2010 theme is “The Role of ITS In The Near Future”. This theme brings focus to the importance of planning, developing and using innovative traffic management systems and mobility services in the near future. Using intelligence built into vehicles and infrastructure has a positive contribution to resolving problems we know them as congestion, reliability, safety and the environment. Developing efficient transport systems has become an increasingly complex task. We can regard intelligent transports systems and services (ITS) as a major plank in the armoury techniques we can use to improve transport quality for all modes.

Public authorities have an essential role in providing the planning, the funding and the regulatory framework. The EU stimulates authorities at local, regional and national level to adopt the long-term integrated policies that are very much needed in complex environments. In recent years, EU policy and legislation relevant to mobility has been developed. Significant funding has been provided through the Structural and Cohesion Funds. EU-funded initiatives, often supported by the Framework Programmes for research and technological development, have helped to develop a wealth of innovative approaches.

What is the next step? The answer is: ITS Action, action to deploy ITS, especially in the rail sector ERTMS (European Railway Traffic Management System) and also road sector, where systems should be more harmonised and open to the EU ITS Framework. The introduction of ITS will greatly facilitate the interaction of all transport modes working together, including air sector and sea programme.

It is of great importance to establish a research network of Slovenia and nearby countries in the area of transport and tie it to the European and regional research. In cooperation with the Ministry of Transport of Slovenia, basic strategic orientations and activities in the development of a national program of transport research are determined. Each of you will come with your own aspiration to the Symposium will share these with colleagues old and new.

Unique to this event is the encouragement of participation by PhD students who are involved in current state-of-the-art transport research and practical issues concerning ITS. The symposium will give PhD students the opportunity to present their PhD work to a knowledgeable audience. At the same time, it will offer the opportunity for the presentation of achievements of Slovene and foreign researchers.

Further, the symposium gives participants from ministries, universities, research organisations and industry the opportunity to establish personal contacts with the aim of stimulating the efficient transfer of research results to the market, according to the needs and expectations of users of all modes of transportation.

The aim of the symposium is also to encourage dialogue and cooperation among the participants who are involved in solving the problems and looking for common solutions.
